Current evidence on the use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection: a narrative review

The COVID 19 pandemic was declared in March 2020 and although there is no specific drug to treat the disease, chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) are being clinically tested after positive in vitro results. In the search for drugs that can help fight the outbreak, several countries have launched guidelines regulating the use of CQ and HCQ. This study aims to review the literature and identify the scientific evidence published to date on the use of CQ and HCQ in the treatment of patients affected by the coronavirus. The results found indicate that despite an initial euphoria with positive results from the effects of the drug, there is a tendency in which the most current clinical trials do not recommend the use of these drugs other than on an experimental basis due to divergences in the results found. More evidence is needed, from randomized clinical trials, to confirm or refute the use of CQ and HCQ.
