The use of electronic cigarettes among youth: exploring the effects on overall health.

Abstract

Although e-cigarettes are a safer alternative to conventional smoking, growing evidence indicates that they can also cause physical harm and lead to nicotine dependence in a similar way to traditionalcigarettes Objective: To fill gaps in the understanding of the effects of electronic cigarettes (EC), providing a solid basis for future research and contributing to the enlightenment of the young user population about the risks associated with the use of these devices. The research consisted of an integrative literature review, using databases such as SciELO, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and PubMed. The initial search resulted in 3,501 articles, of which 91 were selected based on inclusion criteria, resulting in 11 analyzed studies. The process included collecting relevant data and critically interpreting the results. Results and Discussion: The results showed that electronic cigarettes are related to various respiratory, cardiovascular and oral health problems, as well as increasing oxidative stress and the incidence of mental health problems such as depression. The popularity of the flavors and the aesthetics of the devices play a significant role in attracting young people. Conclusion: Despite the perceived safety of e-cigarettes, they have harmful health consequences, making them a worrying public health issue. The review highlights the urgency of educational interventions and further research to clarify the risks of EC use, especially among adolescents and young adults.
