Abstract

Obesity is a chronic disease that has systemic repercussions, it is one of the oldest metabolic disorders in history and is associated with various comorbidities. In this context, various anti-obesity drugs such as sibutramine and semaglutide have appeared on the market. Therefore, the objective of this study is to compare the efficacy of the GLP-1 analog semaglutide with sibutramine in anti-obesity pharmacotherapy. This study is configured as an integrative review and in order to prepare this study, publications were selected from the PubMed and Medline databases, with the help of filters and keywords, and clinical trials of a quantitative and qualitative nature were included. Regarding the results achieved, sibutramine showed efficacy, especially in adolescents, promoting weight loss of up to 10 kg, with improvements in BMI, binge eating and anxiety. The combination of sibutramine with diet therapy resulted in additional weight loss and long-term maintenance. However, semaglutide showed superior results, with losses of up to 38% of body mass, especially in patients with a BMI >30, standing out as more effective than sibutramine and placebo, even with lower doses and prolonged treatments. In conclusion, both drugs were effective in weight loss, but semaglutide proved to be significantly superior, with losses of up to 38%, milder side effects and greater efficacy in severe cases of obesity.
