Abstract

This paper presents the results of the first cycle of the Zero Waste Pathway Program, implemented at Hospital Ernesto Dornelles (HED), with the goal of developing sustainable solid waste management practices, building ESG indicators, and preparing the institution for Zero Waste certification. The project was motivated by the creation of the hospital's Environmental Management Department in May 2022, aiming to strengthen socio-environmental culture and reduce the negative environmental impacts typical of hospital activities. In 2023, a partnership was established with the Green Thinking Project startup, which led the implementation. The adopted methodology was mixed, involving a situational diagnosis, participatory action planning, internal training, practical interventions, and continuous performance measurement. Key results include the training of 1,903 staff members, increased recycling and composting, creation of an internal sustainability committee, heightened employee engagement, and strategic partnerships. The program’s implementation resulted in a significant reduction of infectious and chemical waste and a financial saving of BRL 189,110.22 in solid waste management costs from 2023 to 2024. Additionally, there were positive environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emission reduction and social benefits, including enhanced institutional image and stronger community relations. Challenges included resistance to change, high staff turnover, hazardous waste management, and integration across hospital departments, necessitating ongoing training and process customization.
