Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool for developing assistive technologies aimed at including people with disabilities. This study, conducted through a literature review in databases such as PubMed and SciELO, analyzed 14 selected articles out of 188 initially identified, using the descriptors “Artificial Intelligence”, “Self-Help Devices” and “Persons with Disabilities”. The results demonstrate that AI is revolutionizing assistive technology through solutions such as smart wheelchairs with computer vision (Lecrosnier et al., 2020), brain-computer interfaces for individuals with paralysis (Belwafi & Ghaffari, 2024), and adaptive robotic prostheses (Seppich et al., 2022). Beyond functional benefits, these technologies promote social empowerment, as evidenced by applications for hearing impairments that convert speech to sign language (Kim et al., 2016) and 3D audio-based navigation systems for the blind (Souza, Cardoso, & Lamounier, 2018). However, significant challenges persist, including ethical concerns regarding data privacy (Hartmann, Primc, & Rubeis, 2023), high costs that limit accessibility (El-Taher et al., 2021), and a lack of technological standardization (Ran, Banes, & Scherer, 2022). In conclusion, while AI represents a transformative advancement in promoting autonomy and social inclusion, its full potential will only be realized through approaches that balance technical innovation with ethical principles, economic accessibility, and inclusive public policies, ensuring that the benefits reach all segments of the population with disabilities.
