Abstract

The female menstrual cycle is characterized by cyclical variations in hormonal levels, which modulate a series of physiological functions. These fluctuations can impact parameters related to physical performance. This study aims to analyze the effects and impacts of the menstrual cycle on physical performance, taking into account the different phases of the menstrual cycle and their implications for physical training. The methodology involved a systematic review of articles published between 2024 and 2025 in the PubMed and SciELO databases, using descriptors such as "menstrual cycle" and "athletic performance". The results indicate that the follicular and luteal phases present significant differences in physical performance, with the follicular phase being associated with better performance due to high estrogen levels, while the luteal phase, with increased progesterone, can lead to a decrease in performance. It is concluded that recognizing the phases of the menstrual cycle is essential for optimizing physical training in women, allowing adjustments that consider hormonal variations and their consequences on performance.
