Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal pain is a relevant clinical phenomenon, especially in Neonatal Intensive Care Units, where newborns are frequently subjected to painful procedures. Traditional assessment methods are limited by subjectivity and low standardization. The aim of this study is to review the scientific literature on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the assessment of pain in neonates. METHODOLOGY: This is a narrative literature review with a qualitative approach, based on 14 articles obtained through an active search in PubMed, LILACS, SciELO and UpToDate, published between 2010 and 2025. RESULTS: The studies analyzed show that AI-based tools, such as facial recognition software and neural networks, have a high degree of accuracy and enable continuous monitoring of neonatal pain. However, technical challenges, such as the limitation in capturing full facial expressions and the lack of extensive clinical validation, still limit their implementation. CONCLUSION: We conclude that AI is a promising complementary tool to traditional clinical assessment, with great potential for neonatal care, but still in a consolidation phase.
