Abstract

The widespread use of generative artificial intelligences (AIs) has transformed digital content creation but also raised concerns regarding the rise of “digital waste”: irrelevant, repetitive, or misleading automated content that compromises the quality of informational ecosystems. This phenomenon negatively affects the reliability of repositories, data curation, and user experience. This study conducted a systematic review guided by the PRISMA protocol to investigate the virtual impacts of digital waste generated by AIs. Articles published between 2018 and 2025 were selected based on thematic relevance, originality, and methodological rigor, drawn from national and international databases. The analysis revealed a significant increase in automated content production, particularly after the emergence of models like GPT-3, GPT-4, and DALL·E. Noted consequences include informational saturation, cognitive fatigue among users, spread of misinformation, and the inadequacy of filtering mechanisms in digital platforms. Moreover, there is an ethical gap regarding the responsibility of AI developers for the consequences of synthetic content. The study concludes that the problem is multidimensional and demands integrated solutions, including technical guidelines, public policies, curation tools, and digital education. Addressing digital waste is essential to preserve the integrity of virtual environments and ensure the responsible use of AI technologies.
