Abstract

Self-medication (SM) consists of obtaining and using medicines without medical advice in order to treat self-diagnosed illnesses. This practice can have serious health consequences, alter diagnoses and promote drug resistance, among other factors. In view of this, this study aims to carry out a qualitative narrative review, analyzing the factors that influence self-medication in medical students. The following descriptors were used: "self medication", "students", "medicine" and "health", searched in the ScienceDirect, PubMed, Periódico Capes and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde(BVS) databases, from 2018 to 2023, in order to include publications in English and Portuguese.
